Google may be going after Apple by acquiring Motorola Mobility, but Fusion Garage is making its own attempt against Apple’s iPad with the Grid-10, a new tablet that offers predictive intelligence. A Grid-10 16GB tablet sells for $499, and the 32GB model is $599.
The company is also rolling out a Grid smartphone in the fourth quarter that will sell unlocked for $399. But is the price, the unlocked feature, and the innovation enough to compete with Apple? Fusion Garage is making plenty of comparisons with Apple’s products.
“This is not a re-skinned version of Android,” said Chandra Rathakrishnan, CEO of Fusion Garage. “What we did with the Android kernel is akin to what Apple did when it created the Mac OS. They built a completely new OS on top of UNIX BSD, and we took exactly the same approach with Android. This approach gave us the stability of Android and allowed us to bring a new level of functionality, aesthetics and flair to the tablet market. It also allowed us to power a completely new type of user interface.”
Innovative Features
The Grid user interface is entirely gesture-based — except for keyboard input — and eliminates the need for any buttons beyond power on and off. Rather than slide a bar, the user signs on with a signature. Users can put desktop icons wherever they want on the home screen, based on categories.
The Grid-10 user interface also offers wheel-based interaction. A finger tap brings up a wheel icon with spokes that enables several functions, such as edit, search and buy with the slide of a finger. And the predictive intelligence feature anticipates user needs.
Intelligent notifications determine the time of day an event takes place and offers time-based suggestions, such as restaurant recommendations near a user’s GPS-determined lunch location. And an intelligent calendar determines… Details
